Arisi Paruppu Saadam is a traditional Tamil Nadu dish that blends rice and lentils in a simple yet flavorful combination. Often referred to as “comfort food,” this dish is a staple in many households, especially in the Kongu Nadu region of Tamil Nadu. The name itself translates to “rice and lentil rice” (arisi meaning rice, paruppu meaning lentils, and saadam meaning rice or meal).
This wholesome Arisi paruppu sadam is typically made with fewer spices, allowing the natural flavors of the ingredients to shine through. The simplicity of this South Indian cuisine, coupled with its nutritional benefits, makes it a favorite for both children and adults alike. Though it seems like preparing this Arisi Paruppu Sadam or Rice is difficult, actually it is way as simple as any other South Indian dish (not all , hehe! 🙂)
Arisi Paruppu Sadam goes hand in hand with any type of side dish,be it the rice alone, papadam (appalam), curd, even pickle could be the best side dish. It’s comforting taste and easy preparation make it a beloved choice for those seeking a taste of authentic South Indian cuisine.
Main Ingredients
- 1 cup rice
- 1/4 cup toor dal
- 2 cups water
Other Ingredients
- 3 tablespoons of any edible oil
- 1/4 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1/4 teaspoon mustard seeds
- 2 sprigs curry leaves
- 2 dried red chilies
- 2 onions. finely chopped
- 6 cloves of garlic
- 2 tomatoes, finely chopped
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon sambar powder
- 1 tablespoon hot Ghee for serving
Arisi Parupu sadam cooking Instructions:
- Wash and soak the rice and toor dal in water.
- Heat the oil in a pressure cooker. Add the mustard seeds, cumin seeds, curry leaves, and dried red chilies. Allow the mustard seeds to pop.
- Add the onions and garlic, and sauté until the onions are soft and lightly browned.
- Add the finely chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, sambar powder, and salt. Sauté until the tomatoes are cooked well.
- Add some hot water to the pressure cooker.
- Strain the rice and dal, and add them to the pressure cooker.
- Adjust the salt to taste.
- Cook the rice at pressure for 3 whistles on medium heat, or until cooked, similar to preparing regular white rice.
- Allow the pressure cooker to cool down and then remove it from the stove.
- Add a tablespoon of ghee to enhance the flavor of the Arisi Paruppu Sadam.
